‘V.E. Day - 1945’, Acrylic on canvas, 57 X 40 ins, 2021

Rex Matthew Dixon is a painter who works in a gestural manner with figurative overtones. The diversity of his style remains decipherable, never muddled in the dominant trends of the day. He has a profound interest in art history as a form of subject matter rather than a gravitation to a vernacular style or subject. His mastery lies in the fact that while his work may resemble many art movements or genres, it retains an indisputably unique flair and fluidity that does not pigeon-hole or typecast him into any category. His high tone colour never disguises the fluidity of the line. The figurative elements of his work show his competence and skill in that area  and has arisen out of a profound proficiency in drawing and painting, and a genuine need to engage in experimentation.
